“Bay Buchanan-‘That’s
his legacy-food stamps, debt and embassies under siege’”

Last Tuesday, Bay Buchanan appeared on
CNN’s “The Situation Room.” Buchanan
told Joe Johns, who was standing in for Wolf Blitzer, that Mitt Romney’s
decisions on the economy and foreign policy would be sounder than what
President Obama’s decisions have been.
Buchanan stated that under President Obama there has been a rise in
the number of Americans on food stamps, as well as an increase in debt and
U.S. “embassies under siege.” Buchanan
said, “That’s his legacy-food stamps, debt and embassies under
siege.” Here, Buchanan is referring to the 47 million Americans on
food stamps, the $16 trillion plus debt, and the embassy attacks in Libya
and Egypt. Her comments were
a response to the backlash Romney has received for his comments concerning
the 47% of Americans who do not pay federal income tax.
Mother
Jones received a video of Romney speaking at a fundraiser. The fundraiser took place on May 17, 2012, at Marc Leder’s
(co-CEO of Sun Capital Partners, Inc, and co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers)
home in Boca Raton, Florida. In the
video that Mother Jones released, Romney said,
“There are 47 percent who are with him (President Obama), who are
dependent upon government, who believe that-that they are victims, who believe
that government has the responsibility to care for them, who believe that they
are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.”
The Tax Policy Center released a report stating that, in 2011, 47% of the
adult population did not pay federal income tax.
However, Roberton Williams of the Tax Policy Center noted in his article
“Why Do People Pay No Federal Income Tax?” that just because an American
doesn’t pay federal income taxes it doesn’t mean he doesn’t pay any taxes.
Williams noted that Americans pay federal payroll, excise, state and
local income, sales, and property taxes. He
further noted that the amount of money a person makes in a year and the number
of people he has to take care of will determine if he will pay federal income
taxes.
Romney’s
generalization of the 47% of the people as victims did not sit too well with
some top Republicans. On MSNBC
“The Ed Show,” Ed Schultz reported that Karl Rove stated that some of the
people Romney is referring to receive a social security check that is a result
of the work they have done over the years.
Rove also noted that there are people who are unemployed and looking for
work. On her blog for the Wall
Street Journal, Peggy Noonan wrote in her article “Time for an Intervention”
that Romney is in danger of losing the election.
Noonan said, “I think
there is a broad and growing feeling now, among Republicans, that this thing is
slipping out of Romney’s hands.” On
CNN’s “Starting Point” with Soledad O’Brien, Erick Erickson provided
somewhat of a defense for Romney. Erickson
said that Romney needed to talk about why so many Americans must turn to the
government for assistance. However,
he did admit that Romney’s comments were not well stated and “dumb.”
